Petcare in France: the rise of preventive hygiene amid soaring costs

The pet care sector is reaching a historic milestone in France. According to the FACCO-Odoxa 2025 barometer, the country now has 79 million pets, including 9.7 million dogs. At the same time, the average annual budget per household has jumped to around €1,150 per dog (Source: L'Essentiel de l'Éco/Ifop), an increase of over 125% since 2020, driven by inflation and the premiumization of pet care.

This surge in spending is changing owner behavior. Faced with increasingly high veterinary fees—which can vary threefold depending on the region according to the Mammouth Déchaîné study—consumers are now prioritizing preventive hygiene.

Meanwhile, the humanization of pets has led to a new luxury segment, with brands like Prada and Gucci appearing in specialized pet sections. Combining veterinary expertise with premium cosmetic codes, canine care is becoming a major innovation arena for the industry.
